Linnea beat a quick retreat from the pottery works, heading out into the chilly dusk. Jace was meeting her on the far side of town in an hour to give her a lift back up the mountain.

She waved to both Becca and Juliet, who were closing up their own shops; Becca looked as if she might come out, but Linnea hurried toward the alley that led to Main Sreet. She couldn’t take anymore well-intentioned prying, and only yesterday Becca had come into the pottery shop during her break and asked about Rob.

“There definitely were sparks between you two on Saturday,” she’d said, waggling her eyebrows meaningfully. “Lots of sparks.”

“We’re friends,” Linnea had said, and she’d meant it—but she realized it was Rob she wanted to see now. Rob her friend, who had listened to some of her story and hadn’t judged. Maybe she would tell him more of it. Maybe he would understand.

She came to Main Street and turned toward the college, digging her hands deep into the pockets of her coat as she hunched her shoulders against the biting November wind and headed for Rob’s house.

She’d already rung the doorbell and listened to its chimes echo through the house before she realized it was only a little after five. Rob was probably still at his office.

She turned to face the student union and the rest of the campus; the administrative offices were located next to the library, across the quad. She could, at least in theory, walk across there and see if Rob was in. Ask if he was free later, the way friends did. If she had a cell phone or a computer, she would have called or e-mailed. She hadn’t yet put down enough roots to have that kind of contact information, and as her mother’s voice played in her head, she knew she wanted to see Rob now. She craved the comfort of another human being who was ready to listen.

But going to his office felt like a bigger step than reaching out to a friend; it was crossing a barrier. Unlearning the lessons of her past and forging a future where someone like her could be friends with the president of a college.

Taking a deep breath, Linnea headed over. The quad was deserted, dusk already falling on the gracious buildings and leafless trees. Linnea opened the door to the office building; inside everything was hushed, the sounds of typing and telephone calls muted by the plush carpeting.

A young woman in a silk blouse and pencil skirt, looking every inch the polished PA, glanced up as Linnea approached.

“May I help you?”

“Yes . . .” Linnea smiled, or tried to. “I’m here to see Rob. Rob Sanders.”

“President Sanders?” The woman’s eyebrows rose. “Do you have an appointment?”

Was she imagining the surprise and censure in the woman’s voice? Linnea couldn’t be sure. God knew she was paranoid about stuff like this. Being here was way, way out of her comfort zone. “No, I don’t.” She glanced around at the oil paintings of past presidents, the silk-striped loveseat.
